Imitation a flattery?

So, I've been meaning to write about this imitation in the business world, when does flattery cease and when does it become a concern?

About eight years ago, I started a business and put a lot of work into what my website content would say (literally page by page) and even hired a content writer to make sure my content was speaking to my audience and check for grammatical errors etc. This was part of my start-up costs as I felt that whatever was on my website would represent my brand then.

A couple of months later, a competitor's website had the exact same wording and images on their website, more like replica. Guess what? Someone told me the famous line "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", I was thinking girl, no! There was a lot of work that went into the site and here was someone merely copying and pasting? Well this became a legal matter because after a friendly nudge, she blatantly refused to remove the wording, and later had to pay my legal fees and damages.

In recent months I've come to notice another imitation, similar images, similar posts (I don't say I'm an absolute original) but when I look at my posts and theirs, my website and theirs...initially I thought it was cute. But now, I can't help but wonder, is it doing yourself and your brand justice if you just imitate what someone else is doing? Would it not be even better to identify and grow your own brand.

What causes a person to not be authentic, why would Elona's way be better than yours? I believe we are each uniquely gifted, (even in the exact same field) there's someone out there waiting for your message but because it is packaged Elona's way, they don't find you.

In a saturated field, the temptation to copy and paste may be strong, but there's just so much fulfilment in working from an authentic space.

So whether its from an intellectual property perspective, an honesty and integrity one, don't be an imitation, you've got a story to tell, a service to deliver and a market that's waiting just for you! Choose to be you :)

Be your best self and let your voice be heard :)
